Riley is HOME!

Riley is home! She is such a good puppy. She is just 7 weeks old, but she slept through the night, all night, last night! Camille is absolutely thrilled with her (it was tough to get Camille to go to bed last night.) Here are the most recent photos. The breeder made the toy bone (in addition to a blanket which is not show) for each of the puppies... Baxter, Lady Ann, Grace and Riley. Too cute!

To give you some idea of Riley's size, here is Riley sitting in my hat...

Buddy, Mooney & Rah

I know a lot of kids have a favorite stuffed toy. I had a bear named "Merrill" (at the suggestion of my Grandfather) that I was very attached to for years. Camille has quite a collection of stuffed toys, but 3 seem to have special importants. These 3 have names (rather than just being called "bear" or "dog" like most of her other stuffed toys). They all seem to have equal importants, that is she is as happy with one as the other and she doesn't ever seem to want or need all 3. She named these animals herself. I really don't know where the names came from, except for "Rah", the lion cub. Camille was playing with Rah and I said, "What do you have, Camille?" Camille answered "Kitty" and held up the toy. I said, "Oh, Camille, that's the lion cub from Aunt Rhonda (who brought the toy back from a trip to Africa in 2005) and Camille then roared like a lion. I said "That's right!" and that's how Rah, got his name. The dog is something Daddy bought while we were still paperchasing. His name is Buddy. Camille has always called him that. And the bear is something Camille picked out for her second birthday at Build-a-Bear Workshop, as far as I know, he's always been "Mooney".

Friday Family FotoFun Challange - Bad Photos

Wow... There are so many to choose from. These were chosen only from our trip to China in July 2005...

I saw a cool idea for an adoption announcement on a website. Hold the new baby up in the air with a traditional building in the background. The website had a smiling baby boy in front of a traditional Russian building. this was the result of my attempt with poor Camille... needless to say, this photo was not included in the announcement...

Here are two failed attempts at getting a family photo while we were in China... (we never did get a good picture of all three of us...

This photo was taken using the time on our camera while propped on the TV in the hotel room:

This phot was taken by a member of our travel group on the famous "Red Couch":

Here's the cream of the crop of bad photos from China... I managed to break a couple of toes while we were traveling... There was really nothing that could be done and I was well on my way to healing by time we returned to the states.

Getting ready for Riley...

We're getting ready to bring Riley home next Monday, February 19th. She will be 7 weeks old. We are all very excited. We have acquired a puppy "play pen" and bought a few toys. We'll have a blanket and newspapers in the pen and this is where Riley will stay when we are not home.

I also found the cutest Shabby Chic dog bed at Target, so I just had to buy it. I know Riley won't be ready for it for several months, so for now it will probably stay in our closet. But I just thought it was adorable!

We have a travel crate. We left it along with a leash and collar at Mimi's house since she will be visiting the breeder next Monday to pick up Riley. The breeder is sending some dog food home with Riley, but I will need to get a bag of the new puppy food and a shallow feeding dish. I also need to pick up a soft brush so Riley can get used to being "groomed". I have Barron's "The Complete Guide to the Shih Tzu", so I think I am getting pretty well educated on the subject matter. We are all very excited and can't wait to bring Riley home!!!

Friday Family FotoFun Challange - Sleeping Babies

This has to be my favorite sleeping photo...

First night with us in China... we imagined she stretched out because it was the first time she had her own crib.

A nap on the couch at home.

Our dalmatian, Rockie, was a great napping buddy.

Unfortunately, she passed in July 2006. We miss her dearly.

These are all special photos... we are quite fond of them.

Working from home

Cami Rose and I worked from home today. She's been battling a nasty cold and I had too much work to do to simply take the day off. So, it was our first official "Work from Home" day. It was important that Cami stayed occupied so Mommy could actually get some work done. We recently acquired a My First Leap Pad from a friend who said her daughter had no interest in it (Thanks, Deb!). Cami, who is almost 2 1/2 years old, absolutely LOVES the Leap Pad. Once I taught her how to turn it on and touch the green 'go' circle with the pen, she was hooked! It's a really neat learning toy. It has volume control and even a place where we can put headphones later on.

So, between the Leap Pad and a nice long afternoon nap, I actually got a lot of work done today!

(As a side note, Cami's feet look huge because she is wearing Hannah's old cowgirl boots (Thanks again, Deb!) They are still a couple of sizes too big, but she loves to wear them anyway!)

A New Puppy

No one really thought we'd wait this long. It's been almost 6 months since Rockie, our Dalmatian, died and we are (well, I am) finally ready for a new dog. A friend of Cami's Grammy has the most lovable dog, a Shih Tzu name Gracie. Gracie had 4 puppies on December 29, 2006. On Saturday, we went to visit the puppies...

Cami meets Gracie and checks out the whelping box...

Those little puppies sure do tickle!
This is the puppy we selected. She is a female. We are considering the names "Riley" or "Rosie". It's hard to name a puppy that's only a week old!

So, a Chinese child and a Chinese dog... What more could we ask for?

Camp Little Rock

Every year I volunteer at a camp for visually impaired and blind children. This past summer, I took Cami out for a visit. She had a wonderful time. These are some photos I found on the Little Rock Foundation's website. You can learn more about the foundation and see more pictures from camp by visiting http://www.littlerockfoundation.org

Where'd it go?

Now... Then...

A new Cami recently invented is "Where'd it go?"... She'll take a object, a toy, a cup, an acorn, it doesn't really much matter, hide it and then look around and say "Where'd it go?" She uses just the funniest voice intonation and puts her hands up in the air in a questioning posture. Then she'll smile that cheshire smile that most two year olds are good at and say, "There it is!"... I think she knew all along!

When I think "Where'd it go?" I am usually thinking about the time. I look at this little girl, so beautiful, so confident, so full of life and I wonder what happened to the tiny, fragile baby that I brought home from China. Was it yesterday? Or was is it a million years ago..

Picture People

The Picture People is a children's photography studio. About the time for Camille's second birthday portraits, I received advertising from the Picture People that they were having a special promotion called New Faces. In addition to special package prices (which were still expensive) you could choose a photo from the shoot to enter in the New Faces contest. Well, wouldn't you know, we entered our favorite photo from the shoot (it was hard to choose one, they were all really good) and Cami won! We received a certificate for a free photo shoot and photo package and the photo will be entered in the national contest in the catagory of children ages 1-3. The Picture People store also used Cami's photo for their display. I've added a photo of Cami sitting in front of her photo display at the studio.

Look who's TWO!

Okay, her official birthday is not for a few more days, but this past weekend we had a party to celebrate Miss Cami Rose's second birthday. We had a monkey themed party. Grammy even made sock monkeys for each of the children at the party (there were 10 total). We had a sprinkler party in the backyard. It was simple and everyone loved it. Happy Birthday Cami! We love you!

Goodbye old friend

So as not to disrupt the spirit of the blog, I am not going to dwell on this subject matter. But it is a significant life event for our family, so I thought I would mention it. Our Dalmatian, Rockie, died today. She was 14 years old. We all loved her dearly and she will be sadly missed.

A special day...

Camille spent exactly 11 months of her life in an orphanage. Although she was cared for, she was still an orphan. For 11 months she had no mommy or daddy. Today June 19, 2006 marks 11 months and 1 day that Camille has been our daughter. She has known the love of a family for longer than she went without. She knows what it is like to sleep in her own bed and wear her own shoes and her own clothes. She goes to bed knowing that if she cries, she has a mommy and daddy that will immediately comfort her. She has a family, including grandparents that absolutely adore her and love her more than even they believed possible. I can't imagine our family without her, she is just perfect. People tell me all the time what a lucky little girl she is, I have to disagree. WE are the lucky ones.

Updating

I am always amazed when I read other people's blogs. Some folks can come up with interesting and anecdotal things to write every day. I seem to have a more difficult time.

So, some time has past since our last entry. Cami 'graduated' from the Toddler program into the Two's program, although she will not be two until late August. Still, the school feels that she is 'mature' enough to move up, so she did.

Actually, the graduation was quite cute. Each toddler in the class was called out by name and walked (or crawled in some cases) across the stage to receive their diplomas. Most of the tots were starstruck. Dispite the practice sessions, it was was difficult for the kids to make it across the stage. Not my kid. She came out smiling and waving as if she had just won the Little Miss NJ pageant! Gotta love it!

So today was the first day in the new classroom. The first official day of the summer program. Except for one new little girl, all of the faces in Cami's Two's class are the same faces from the toddlers. Once again, Cami is the youngest in the class. But she handled it well in the toddler program and I have no doubt that she will be fine. This morning while E... and H... were clinging to their mothers, my Cami waved and shouted "bye-bye" when I brought her into the new classroom. Yes, she will be just fine.
